THE CARPENTERS (RICHARD & KAREN CARPENTER) was the biggest-selling group of the 70's. In 1966, only 500 copies were pressed of Karen's solo single, "Looking For Love/I’ll Be Yours." No fewer than ten of their singles went on to become million-sellers, and by 2005 combined worldwide sales of albums and singles well exceeded 100 million units. Yet the Carpenters were much more than creators of beautifully crafted and hugely successful hit records. Within the space of just a few years their unique and inimitable sound had brought a new dimension to the world of popular music. By 1971, the Carpenters were performing all over the world. In London, they packed the Royal Albert Hall during their first European tour. In America, there were sell-out appearances at such prestigious venues as the Hollywood Bowl, and in Japan they performed the first of what would be many sell-out concerts. Karen's voice, Richard's arrangements and compositions, and overdubbed harmonies, all contributed to the Carpenters' unique sound. "LIKE NEW" 2 ALBUM 1966 BATTLE OF THE BANDS AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL, FEATURING THE RICHARD CARPENTER TRIO (CF-1533-2) Richard Carpenter decided to put together an instrumental trio with him on the piano, Karen on the drums and their friend Wes Jacobs on the bass and tuba. In June, 1966, the Richard Carpenter Trio won three trophies, including the "Combo Division" and the “Sweepstakes”, at the “Battle Of The Bands,” a talent competition held annually at the Hollywood Bowl, and landed a contract with RCA Records. RCA did not see a future in jazz tuba, and the contract was short-lived. Carpenters' compilations From the Top and The Essential Collection include the track "Iced Tea". Now own the original vinyl albums of the 1966 Battle of the Bands at the Hollywood Bowl! A wonderful collectible for any Carpenters' fan!
