This is NOT a "recycled" image from our previous auction. What you see is what you’ll get.  GUARANTEED!) OK, folks, here's what we know about this incredible, APPARENTLY UNRELEASED Judy Garland recording of (we think) her legendary 1961 Hollywood Bowl performance (although it is possible that this is her 1946 performance at the same venue, it is impossible to determine from the typewritten labels), deemed by many to be the single greatest concert performance of her entire career. That night, Judy took her Carnegie Hall concert to The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. This concert included “Never Will I Marry,” “Oh, What A Little Moonlight Can Do,” and “Just In Time,” keeping her Carnegie Hall program fresh for herself and her audience. The show broke the Bowl’s box office record. It grossed $72,412. Judy was guaranteed $25,000 against a percentage, which made her take-home pay $30,000. 17,823 people in attendance (a full house), who refused to leave even during a heavy downpour of rain. After the show, 1,000 people waited backstage to see Judy before she left for supper at Romanoff’s. According to Eddie Sherman’s column, Judy was given an ovation when she entered the restaurant. He noted that “a well-known Hollywood columnist sitting in front of Judy’s sister during the concert thought the sister was a bit too demonstrative. The writer was silenced with: ‘Where were you when Judy needed you?'” Here's what you should know about this recording: - Judy Garland is accompanied by an unidentified male vocalist (eerily resembling Dean Martin in timbre, phrasing and diction, but probably not him) on most of the songs. - The songs and the arrangements are closer to the early '50s than to the early '60s style. It is possible that this was a recording of her 1946, not her 1961 Hollywood Bowl performance. - The audience noises are unnatural, stiff and somewhat awkward, as if being overdubbed "canned" applause. The fades can be rather abrupt and unnatural, as if the songs were poorly grafted on each other. - It is possible that this is not the recording of the actual concert but, rather, main STAGE REHEARSAL before the live audience in order to create the concert program that would follow "live" later. - The recording does NOT recreate her legendary Carnegie Hall concert (as her 1961 Hollywood Bowl performance does), although some songs do overlap. This is possibly due to the abridged nature of the recording. Our best guess and intuitive assessment of  this acetate demo 12" disc is that this was an acetate for the title Capitol records had in the works, but that Judy Garland (or someone else in Capitol, her label) simply wasn't satisfied with the quality of the recording and that the album was shelved before it had a chance to be re-edited and released). Our estimate is that the album - had it been released - would have been released somewhere between 1956 and 1962. PLEASE NOTE: THIS ACETATE APPARENTLY NEVER HAD A CUSTOM COVER;  THE ALBUM WILL BE SHIPPED IN A PLAIN, GENERIC [WHITE] CARDBOARD COVER. ACETATES AND REFERENCE PRESSINGS ARE RARELY – IF EVER – FOUND IN CUSTOM (STOCK) COVERS. While this acetate is in a very nice state of preservation, we do expect bidders to understand that the aluminum-based, shellac-coated acetates can never be graded by using the exact, same stringent standards used by collectors for modern long-play, hi-fi LPs or singles. The buyer – if not familiar with acetate (reference) recordings - should be cautioned that these discs were intended for brief, limited use only; they were meant to be played only a few times, then discarded or destroyed. In view of this, the surface layer of the disc is manufactured in such a manner that it will wear off pretty quickly, even under normal conditions -- and specially if not handled with due care. Each subsequent playing increases wear and tear of the disc’s surface layer and diminishes the disc’s playability. This disc appears to have been unplayed recently and the grooves are still well-formed and fully visible. This acetate is in about VERY GOOD+(+) condition. Absolutely NO part of the shellac (surface layer) of the disc is  missing, and the surface layer is NOT dented, chipped, broken or otherwise compromised. ON A SCALE FROM 1-10 (where 10 is the best), WE GRADE RECORD AS 6 · COVER : This acetate comes without any custom jacket, and will be shipped in a plain, generic, white cardboard cover (not separately graded). POSTAGE & SHIPPING: We offer THREE postage rates for both Domestic and International Mail: Media Mail, Priority Mail and Express Mail for domestic, and First Class, Priority International Mail, and Express International Mail for international orders.
