RecordCollector Magazine's/ Goldmine Standard Grading Guide: "MINT: The record itself is in brand newcondition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The coverand any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfectcondition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint. Near Mint (NM or M-) : A nearly perfectrecord. Many dealers won't give a grade higher than this implying (perhapscorrectly) that no record is ever truly perfect. The record should showno obvious signs of wear. A 45 RPM or EP sleeve should have no more thanthe most minor defects, such as almost invisible ring wear or other signs ofslight handling. An LP cover should have no creases, folds, seam splits orother noticeable similar defects. No cut-out holes, either and of course, thesame should be true of any other inserts, such as posters, lyric sleeves andthe like. An LP in near mint condition looks as if you just got it home from anew record store and removed the shrink wrap. Near Mint is the highest pricelisted in all Goldmine price guides. Anything that exceeds this grade, in theopinion of both buyer and seller, is worth significantly more than the highestGoldmine book value. EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there isvery little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might haveslight wear and / or creasing. In general, ifnot for a couple things wrong with it, this would be Near Mint. Very Good Plus(VG+): Generally worth 50% of the NearMint value. A Very Good Plus record will show some signs that it was played andotherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surfacesshow some signs of wear and have slight scuffs or very light scratches thatdon't affect one's listening experiences. Slight warps that do not affect thesound are "OK". The label may have some ring wear or discoloration, but it should be barely noticeable. The center hole will not have beenmisshapen by repeated play. Picture sleeves and LP inner sleeves will have someslight wear, lightly turned up corners, or a slight seam split. An LP cover mayhave slight signs of wear also and may be marred by a cut-out hole, indentationor corner indicating it was taken out of print. VERY GOOD: Therecord has obviously been played many times, but displays no majordeterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasionallight scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without anymajor defects. Good Plus(G+):Generally worth10-15% of the Near Mint value. Good does not mean Bad! A record in Good or GoodPlus condition can be put onto a turntable and will play through withoutskipping. But it will have significant surface noise and scratches and visiblegroove wear (on a styrene record, the groove will be starting to turn white). Acover or sleeve will have seam splits, especially at the bottom or on thespine. Tape, writing, ring wear or other defects will start to overwhelm theobject. GOOD: Therecord has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeablydeteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover andcontents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc. FAIR: Therecord is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displaysconsiderable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will betorn, stained and / or defaced. POOR: Therecord will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. Thecover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing. BAD: Therecord is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as acollection filler.
