The wonderful Danish Tenor Aksel Schoetz has a great Lyrical voice. His successful career was cut short by a tragic brain tumor, that left him unable to sing. "I admire his Lieder recordings. Die Schöne Müllerin, Dichterliebe, the songs by Nielsen - his interpretations are true treasures and have become classic performances." - cantabile Subito Aksel Schioetz - the Danish JUSSI BJOERLING - the most memorable Danish Lyric Tenor, started recording in 1929 under the pseudonym the Masked Tenor (like Bjoerlings Erik Odde). The 1930s saw him record the unforgettable cycles of Schubert and Schumann. Denmark under German occupation in World War II actually increased his output, because Danish HMV had to re-record all the matrices left in England. Tragically, in 1950, Schioetz suffered from a brain tumor, which left his speech center and facial muscles damaged. With superhuman effort, he retrained himself as a Baritone. How can one describe the wonders of this record. SCHIOETZ is simply one of the greatest BACH Evangelists, right up there with Karl Erb. More is the pity that Schioetz never recorded a complete Passion Morgens Woeldike with Chorus & Orch, M Steen Oboe: Recitative and Aria This is the heartwrenching tremolo aria with the interspersed choral hymn on the death of the Christ: Oh Schmerz Es Zittert das gequaelte Herz ... Chorale: Das ist die Ursarch aller Plagen 1&2 DANISH HMV 12" 78 rpm Record: Condition: EXCELLENT pristine, faintest scuff A series of great Opera recordings, from 1902 G&Ts to 1940 Wartime German records Aksel Schioetz Danish tenor, 1906 - 1975, here is a clip of one of his great Oratorio records Biographical notes: He was born in Roskilde near Copenhagen. He studied modern languages and became a teacher. He had a fine tenor voice which he loved to display at parties and in church. Mogens Wöldike, a choral conductor, made him a tenor member of the “Copenhagen Male Choir” and he was soon entrusted with oratorio solos. He studied with Agnete Zacharias, Valdemar Lincke and John Forsell who was the teacher of Jussi Björling. He married in 1931. He gave his first song recital in 1936. In 1938 he was discovered by the recording company His Master’s Voice. In 1940 Denmark was seized by Hitler. International activities had to be postboned. Because of his successful recordings, he became one of the best loved classical singers. He appeared in opera and operetta and gave recitals all over the country. After the war he was invited to record “Die schöne Müllerin” and “Dichterliebe” with Gerald Moore. He also appeared in the first performances of Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia at Glyndebourne opposite Kathleen Ferrier. He also sang film-songs and in musicals. In 1946 Aksel Schiøtz survived a tumor of the acoustic nerve which had to be operated, but it left the right hand side of his face partly paralysed. He suceeded by sheer will-power to sing in a comeback recital in 1948. In 1955 he entered a new career as a professor at the universities of Minnesota, Toronto and Colorado. He gave master classes in the USA and was regarded as an excellent teacher. He died in 1975. Comment: His great artistry have become increasingly appreciated in recent years because Danacord released his complete recordings. In my opinion, he is one of the most musical and stylistic singers. There is a unique inward passion and an illuminating power in his singing. His Bach and Handel recordings belong to his most wonderful achievements. The fluency of passagework in Messiah and the Christmas Oratorio shows a virtuoso’s mastery (at his time the Bach style was without use of appogiature or other embellishments). I admire his Lieder recordings. Die Schöne Müllerin, Dichterliebe, the songs by Nielsen - his interpretations are true treasures and have become classic performances. Quick NOTE ON GRADING AND SHIPPING: As you can see from my feedback, I try hard to earn your POSITIVE FEEDBACK and FIVE STAR RATINGS. If for any reason your transaction was NOT SATISFACTORY, pls contact me and I will work something out with you. YOU WILL NEVER HAVE A REASON TO GIVE ME A NEGATIVE RATING or a LOW STAR RATING. Quick note on grading: The Grade (Excellent to Fair, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately, when prefaced with "HOWEVER" or "BUT" they will be significant. When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to F), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise. "SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing. "VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing. "Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a given pressing. These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.
