"I CALL YOUR NAME"  (Lennon / McCartney, 1964)   Originally Only Available On The 1964 Mono "Long Tall Sally" EP , This Album Has The True Stereo Version.   I call your name but you're not there,   Was I to blame for being unfair?   Oh, I can't sleep at night,   Since you've been gone,   I never weep at night,   I can't go on.   Well don't you know I can't take it? I don't know who can,   I'm not going to make it,   I'm not that kind of man.   Oh, I can't sleep at night,   But just the same , I never weep at night, I call your name. Don't you know I can't take it?   I don't know who can, I'm not going to make it,   I'm not that kind of man.   Oh, I can't sleep at night,   But just the same,   I never weep at night,   I call your name,   I call your name, I call your name. THE BEATLES "Beatles Past Masters Volumes 1 & 2." DOUBLE LP, UK PRESSING ON VINYL,10th NOVEMBER1988. VERY RARE, STILL COMPLETELY FACTORY SEALED IN SHRINKWRAPPING. THE TRACKS DATE FROM 1962 - 1970 AND ARE IN THE ORIGINAL ABBEY ROAD STUDIO STEREO AND MONO MIXES.   UNLIKE SEPARATELY ISSUED CD VERSIONS, VOLUMES 1 & 2 ON VINYL WERE TOGETHER IN A GATEFOLD COVER. ON THE MATT BLACK & SILVER PARLOPHONE LABEL: BPM 1.   THE LABEL'S RIMS WILL HAVE; "Manufactured In The UK By EMI Records Ltd." AND THE RECORDS WILL BE IN THE ORIGINAL 1988 EMI INNER SLEEVES. FOR TOP CONDITION, MINT VINYL, EBAY IS IN AN UNBELIEVABLE SITUATION, THERE IS NOW MORE COUNTERFEIT FAKES, THAN AUTHENTIC ORIGINALS.   IN SOME CASES, OFFICIAL LICENCES HAVE BEEN OBTAINED TO RE-PRESS THEM, OR THE RECORD COMPANIES HAVE RE-ISSUED THEM.  THEY AT LEAST HAVE HONEST SELLERS WHO DECLARE THEIR STATUS, OBVIOUSLY "Beatles Past Masters Volumes 1 & 2" NOW FIGURES AMONG THEM.  GREAT TO SEE IT BECOME A STANDARD ALBUM IN THE BEATLES UK CATALOGUE, IT CERTAINLY BELONGS THERE. THE 2012 VERSION WAS PRESSED IN AN UNKNOWN EUROPEAN COUNRTY AND THE ARTWORK HAS BEEN ALTERED ENOUGH NOT TO MAKE IDENTIFYING THEM A PROBLEM.    THIS 1988  "Beatles Past Masters Volumes 1 & 2," WAS MASTERED IN ABBEY ROAD STUDIOS AND PRESSED IN EMI'S PRESSING PLANT IN HAYES, MIDDELSEX, ENGLAND, LIKE EVERY OTHER BEATLES ALBUM, SINGLE & EP  IN THE 20th CENTURY.   I CAN ONLY CONTINUE TO PROVIDE PRECISE AND DEFINITIVE PRESSING DETAILS FOR AUTHENTIC ALBUMS LIKE THIS WITH TEXT, BACKED WITH CLOSE UP PICTURES. ORIGINAL 1988 GATEFOLD COVER, PRINTED JUST ABOVE THE BACK BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER; 1.) "Printed In England" 2.) "Manufactured In England" 3.) "MT 1088 CMS" Date coding was still in use,'1088 ' = 'October 1988' for the month and year the cover was printed.   The UK release vinyl date was 10th November 1988, eight months after the earlier CD versions   release of two seperate single CD's, "Volume 1" & "Volume 2", both were issued 8th March1988. 4.) "£ Palophone" Logo 5.)  UK Catalogue Numbers  For Vinyl, Cassesttes & CD's 6.) Apple Logo And Trademarks FINALLY, THE MOST CONCLUSIVE ITEM THAT COULD POSSIBLY BE ON AUTHENTIC ALBUMS, PROOF IT WAS ON SALE   IN A UK RECORD SHOP....BEFORE THE INTERNET & EBAY EVEN EXISTED!  THE RARITY OF THIS FACTORY SEALED CAN ONLY OCCAISIONALLY BE OFFERED, BUT NO CONTERFEITER IN THE WORLD CAN REPRODUCE THIS! Stuck UNDER the factory sealed shrinkwrapping is a black and white 'HMV' price and stock sticker, just stacked full of details unique to the original sale in a British record shop. I urge all collector's and sellers alike, to STOP ripping them off covers, that includes the stickers on top and underneath the shrink wrapping, apart from the damage, they contain historical   important information you might not recognise, but those with experience can understand.  It is a sad reflection on a society that allows crooks to prosper, we reached that point way, way before I ever thought it would, or could happen.  When I first first joined ebay their own rules and the laws of this country, they profit from counterfeiter's by taking commission from their sales.  These are the HMV sticker's details, 25 years ago this was an expensive double album to buy; HMV    £20.99 (Bar Code) 00777791135140020994 BEATLES   PAST MAST ROCK LP   B Y5 400 BPM1                   102 THE COVER IS 100% SEALED IN THE ORIGINAL FACTORY SHRINK WRAPPING, WITHOUT ANY EDGE SPLITS AND THAT INCLUDES THE CORNERS AND SPINE ENDINGS.   SO THE WHITE BACK AND SPINE ARE STILL THE ORIGINAL SNOW WHITE COLOUR.   JUST A COUPLE OF TINY ABRAISONS THAT BELONG ON THE OUTSIDE OF A FACTORY SEALED ALBUM AFTER 25 YEARS.   PLUS THE UNAVOIDABLE IMPRESSION OF TWO HEAVYWEIGHT RECORDS AFTER ALL THOSE YEARS STANDING IN STORAGE, ABSOLUTELY PERFECT STORAGE IN A PLASTIC OUTER SLEEVE.   IT REALLY IS A PLEASURE SEEING A TRUE MINT "Past Masters" COVER THROUGH PERFECTLY   OPAQUE SHRINK WRAPPING. BOTH RECORDS AND ALL THE FOUR LABELS ARE IN UNPLAYED/MINT CONDITION. Like all Beatles albums variations are usually not discovered until decades later and 1988 is now closer to the Beatles era that ended in May 1970, than 2013 is, it took me until 2009 to find there was a variation for the UK "Past Master," or as this   vinyl version is fully titled, "Past Masters Volumes 1 & 2."  As per usual, variations occured right at the very beginning of the   pressing sequence and even though so few UK pressings were made, there were enough to keep up that age long tradition. The copy I sold in 2009 had been mistakenly stamped with a ''BTM'  maitrix prefix on all four sides, that was crossed out by hand and the correct 'BPM' re-stamped to the left, again on all four sides.  Like every single Beatles very first pressing I can   think of, such mistakes affected all their 60's albums, most of the singles and EP's as well, so I was hardly surprised to see   another variation.  Right from their 1963 debut album, "Please Please Me", even during the very short run of black & gold label pressings, three known variations exist and no doubt there could well be another variant out there!  Obviously 'BPM' was the initials of the double album's title, the same 'BPM' pre-fix was also used for the CD and Cassette versions, remember those back in 1988?)  The 1980's decade was not quite computer controlled yet and 25 years ago good old human error was still happening on the very first pressings made.  Although this album was pressed in extremely low numbers, maitrix corrections were quickly made and the few with them were sold along with the majority with just 'BPM.'  I am explaining this out of interest, but it might affect the records inside this sealed cover, but I have to say that is unlikely because I also discovered yet another difference on the back's bottom corner, a very small one, but an Apple logo was not printed there.  Once again Apple logo's have been the subject of so many cover variations right from 1969, then continuing throughout the 1970's on solo Beatles albums and other Apple artists.  That even includes labels on singles & LP's, regarding the "Beatles Past Masters" I sold last year, whether that was a mistaken omission I cannot say.  I personally think because the Apple Logo was being introduced in the late 1980's and it went on to become a permanent fixture in the 1990's to the present day for all the Beatles Parlophone / EMI connected items, perhaps that was not a printer's mistake, just a matter of timing.  Exactly how it happened for the 1963 black and gold label "Please Please Me" LP's because the variations also concerned music company publishing companies, in fact, this 1988 double album does indeed have "Northern Songs" on the inside cover and the label credits, 25 years after that first appeared on the black and gold label "Please Please Me" album!   I have not bought the latest CD and vinyl versions of the re-mastered Beatles albums, simply because I have become immune to caring how the latest re-releases sound, after becoming so distanced from   the 20th century mastering.  In saying that, I was very pleased to see "Past Masters Volumes 1 & 2" has now become a Beatles album in it's right, if you check out the fantastic 1960's non album tracks detailed above, such careful Master Tape compiling in 1988 was more than a worthy project, an essential one and in my humble opinion, the original UK vinyl pressing belongs in all original Beatles collections.   The rare EMI British pressed & printed double album vinyl issue of "Past Masters Volumes 1 & 2" differed to the CD issue, both   volumes were only available as individual CD's, plus the late 1980's era was being dominated by CD's and they were released so much earlier, on the 7th March, 1988.  In there is perhaps a huge clue to why and when the varying record maitrixes and covers 'with and without' Apple logo's originated, personally I can see the pattern to this and March 1988 was too early for the CD's to have an Apple logo, having checked my CD copies, bought on the day of release and take my advise, do not dispense with your original 1988 "Past Masters" pair of CD's if they were UK originals!   Move onto the September to November 1988, the vinyl's preparation for "Past Masters" had to have involved changes since the conception in March, just a theory, but I will work on it as I prefer facts to supposition.  In 1988 it first appeared that there would not even be a vinyl pressing made, today that is almost forgotten, how CD's were sweeping record shops clean of vinyl and that alarming dip in the demand was being seen as the end of records.  It was 'twenty (5) years ago today' revisited all right, because good old vinyl has now survived those cassette tapes, 8-track tapes, DAT tapes, Laser Discs, Walkman, Mini Discs, CD's, DVD's with surround sound, downloading from the Internet onto computer hard drives, Ipods, even mobile phones and to any other format of listening to music I have overlooked.  The 'hands on' aesthetic pleasure of playing a record with human scale record covers, refused to go under and a small hardcore who gathered at small record  fairs in the UK during this period, grew and swelled from small back rooms into two day International events held at Wembley, Olympia and Victoria's vast exhibition halls in London alone.   I just checked my ever reliably accurate 'Book Of British Charts', it lists 'Vol's 1 & 2' making chart positions of only No.46 & No.49 respectively, even poorer than I had expected to find, but it also confirmed the information I definitely expected to see. The figures also confirm why EMI relented and pressed the two volumes onto vinyl and the exact date is there to see on these gatefold cover's encoded printing date, the October of 1988, just in time for the 10th November,1988 release date.  EMI were shrewd enough to place the vinyl editions into shops nicely in time for Christmas, the traditional time to buy Beatles records!   As chart books demonstrate, the vinyl issue never even made into the British Top 100, hence the extreme rarity of such a major Beatles double LP, compounded by this being still sealed.  By rarity I am not discussing  scratched records and battered covers or the dubious overseas pressings that are as genuine as the pirate/bootleg picture discs littering ebay!   EMI pressings have   maitrixes no bootlegger could replicate and anyone just getting into buying any decade's UK pressings would be well advised to study honest and regular ebay Beatles sellers... before you get your fingers burnt!   They are simple to understand with just a little patience you can acquire all the info you need to avoid the con men, back to 1988.  Twenty five years ago is indeed a   long time in the lifetime of both the cover and the records, but not so long ago that Mint/unplayed vinyl is out of the question.   I was unable to detail or show the distinctive EMI stamped letters and digits, something no counterfeiter can replicate, but the perfectly clear shrink wrapping allowed me to take close-up pictures of the cover details discussed here.  They are exclusive to the UK pressing and I will also emphasise how the genuine UK pressings came in heavy duty cardboard, top quality covers with an extra wide spine, plus the sheer quality of the printing puts the photo cpoied counterfeit printing to shame, it is about time ebay took action against sellers dealing in fake items.  The facts & figures tell their own story, even the CD's sold poorly but near the end of the year, the vinyl version sales were so low, there was not even a chart entry made, which certainly makes "Past Masters Volumes 1 & 2," one of the worst selling Beatles albums ever issued in the UK... therefore the rarest today.   Eight years later change was in the air, by 1996, "Anthology" was being bought on vinyl even by those without a means to play it, because by then it had become obvious vinyl was not only back into full demand, as well as the 60's originals, latest releases of Beatles records was now being recognised worldwide as being just as desirable.  EMI were correct trying in 1988 for this album and the low sales were just a reaction to the current mass clear out of record collections and CD players replacing turntables in that period. In order to differentiate between the real thing from dubious copies, I have taken a picture of the revelent text to proves this is the original, with the vinyl pressed in EMI's Hayes, Middlesex plant that produced all of those other Beatles first pressings, every one of the printed items was made in the UK.  In 1988 cassettes in Britain were still very much an alternative   to CD's & vinyl, the back's top right corner has all three formats with catalogue numbers for EMI/Parlophone's cassette version;   'TC - BPM 1.'  Not that was 'BPM' and not 'BMT' as these very first made records had, I try to keep theories to myself but when I discover major variations, it seems absurd not saying, it was highly likely vinyl preparation had to originate at the same time   as the cassettes and CD's because this album's Master Tapes were being made then.     As an 1988 Beatles album this was positively a major event and the recent re-masters confirmed that by treating "Past Masters"   as much as a Beatles album as say "Revolver" was.  After all, this is the most comprehensive collection of every non album track,   UK singles with exclusive  B-sides and in many cases, they are in true 1960's stereo mixes.  So are the unique EP track and also   included, the two Beatles German language sung versions of "Sie Liebt Dich"  and "Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand".      The author of "Complete Beatles Recording Sessions" & "Beatles Chronicle", Mark  Lewisohn, did such a brilliant job on the double   album's compilation and his accurately researched, fully detailed track information, makes great reading while hearing the tracks.    The gatefold cover inside has the track listing etc. with superb pictures of The Beatles covering the special years, 1962 - 1969,   with the mentioned track by track breakdown & history.  Twenty three years later and a huge demand for vinyl is increasing every   month for all artists, exactly like in the 1960's decade, the Beatles are immune from trends and their records are still the most   sought after in the world.  I bought "Past Masters" on two separate CD's, the sound was so disappointing, I don't think I played   them more than twice since 1988.  The vinyl's sound is absolutely stunning, from these unplayed / Mint records the sound of first   generation transfers from Abbey Road's Master Tapes, will be sensational, after all, the album title did promise precisely that. These pressings were superbly and perfectly mastered, so I have every confidence the heavyweight vinyl will have virtually no   needle surface sound, I gave the full track info next to the individual tracks listed above, I normally include that with a musical   description.      The album begins with the earliest sound of the r&b of "Love Me Do," then you can join that 'magical, musical journey' through all those great singles from the 1963 to 1965 era.  On through the acid drenched sounds of "Paperback Writer", the incredible "Rain" and next into the "White Album" with "Hey Jude"/"Revolution".  Included here is the stunning original 1968 "Wildlife" LP version of "Across The Universe", reaching the final year 1969 with "Get Back" & "You Know My Name" etc.   All tracks were meticulously compiled to strictly exclude any of the singles that appeared on Beatles albums,"Can't Buy Me Love", "Yellow Submarine", "Eleanor Rigby", "Penny Lane"/ "Strawberry Fields" and all the others were excluded.  I cannot praise the sound quality highly enough, the clarity was not sacrificed by that thin, tinny bass/bottom end sound, the original AAD CD's suffered from. The sheer power of the original mixes was left on the vinyl, the true 60's sound on the vinyl was 100% faithfully reproduced. The Beatles music was only   ever intended to be heard from vinyl, that's the simple truth!  A few personal highlights of the double LP, "Paperback Writer" in the most wonderful stereo,"Day Tripper" for having an original really 'heavy' sounding guitar mix, "Love Me Do" for the original UK mono 45 version mix with Ringo drumming,"Lady Madonna" for an amazing original powerful sound, "Rain" for the awesome stereo mix first heard on the 1970 export only, UK album, "Hey Jude", "Bad Boy" for the original stereo mix from the British 1966   "Oldies" LP, in fact, every track.  My one and only complaint is I would have loved to hear included "Baby You're A Rich Man" and "Strawberry Fields", but I do understand they were on the "Magical Mystery Tour" album in 1976, I respect EMI's reasons for their exclusion. The gatefold cover has a black front for Volume 1, turn it over and the back is white  for Volume 2, where you have all 33 tracks   listed per their sides.  I am not opening the shrinkwrapping, so for anyone yet to see the gatefold cover, the inside and outside   have a lovely glossy coating for a beautiful appearance as well as giving protection against any future handling, should the next   owner decide to open the seal.  Due to the heavy duty cardboard used in 1988 and such perfect storage over the last 25 years,   I can see through enough to to say,  the two record's impressions have been included but this is too trivial to take seriously. {Roy}     R & M RECORDS.
