Collectors traditionally reserve the term picture disc for records with graphics that extend at least partly into the actual playable grooved area, distinguishing them from picture label discs, which have a specially illustrated and sometimes very large label, and picture back discs, which are illustrated on one unplayable side only. While they’re not as common today as they were a few decades ago, picture discs are still produced today. They’re generally released as limited edition pressings alongside their black vinyl counterparts and are intended for the collectors who just want to have everything by a particular artist.In the United States, the format is almost always used for albums, but in Great Britain, picture disc singles, including shaped ones, remain popular as limited edition collector’s items...Most shaped / picture / coloured disc are collected for showing, as opposed to playing, & some are now worth many thousands of pounds... It is known & accepted that on occasion, coloured, shaped, & picture editions, Sound Quality may not be comparable to conventional editions, with crackles & pops ect...
