"TIME OF NO REPLY"   Summer was gone and the heat died down, And Autumn reached for her golden crown, I looked behind as I heard a sigh, But this was the time of no reply. The sun went down and the crowd went home, I was left by the roadside all alone. I turned to speak as they went by, But this was the time of no reply. The time of no reply is calling me to stay, There is no 'hello' and no 'goodbye', To leave there is no way. The trees on the hill had nothing to say, They would keep their dreams 'till another day. So they stood and thought and wondered why, For this was the time of no reply. Time goes by from year to year, And no one asks why I am standing here, But I have my answer as I look to the sky, This is the time of no reply. The time of no reply is calling me to stay, There's no 'hello' and no 'goodbye', To leave there is no way. NICK DRAKE: "Time Of No Reply"  LP, ISSUED 1986. Like every original Nick Drake LP ever released, even such intensive beautiful music has become part of the counterfeiting that crooks & conmen sell as 'repro's' or 're-issues.'  I'm not surprised "Time Of No Reply" has been counterfeited, a fantastic album but so few copies were made and bought 27 years ago, it has become a very rare album especially in Mint condition.  No, it did not get pressed on colour vinyl either, the details here will serve to identify the authentic pressings.  This is an unplayed record and complete with even the postcard inside, to fill out and post to Joe Boyd at Hanninbal Records, a rather nice blue postcard you can see in my pictures.  You will not find one of those inside the counterfeit covers, in fact, most are lost now and this also has the wonderful lyrics & pictures insert, unused with only a gentle impression from the record. HANNIBAL RECORDS: HNBL 1318. MAITRIX: HNBL  1318  A  / HNBL  1318  B VIRTUALLY ALL UK HANNIBAL RECORDS WERE PRESSED IN EITHER HOLLAND OR FRANCE, WHICH COUNTRY   THEY WERE MADE IN IS FOUND ON THE LABELS, THESE HAVE "Made In France."   I NEVER BASE STATEMENTS LIKE THAT ON ISOLATED LP TITLES ON ANY GIVEN LABEL, SO AS ANOTHER EXAMPLE, RICHARD THOMPSON'S "Small Town Romance" ALBUM WAS ALSO RELEASED ON THE HANNIBAL LABEL.   THAT CATALOGUE NUMBERS IS 'HNBL 1316', ONLY TWO DIGITS  OR TITLES BEFORE "Time Of No Reply", EVERY COPY I HAVE SEEN WAS ALSO   MADE IN FRANCE FOR UK DISTRIBUTION.   THE LABEL TEXT IS PRECISELY THAT OF A BRITISH RECORD, EMI HAD   BEEN DOING THE SAME SINCE THE EARLY 1970's AND THEY WERE HARDLY A SMALL INDEPENDENT LABEL LIKE JOE BOYD'S 'HANNIBAL RECORDS.' ORIGINAL 1986 LINED, DIE-CUT CENTRE INNER SLEEVE, IN UNUSED MINT- CONDITION. ORIGINAL 11" SQUARE INSERT, PRINTED ON GLOSSY PAPER ARE THE FULL LP LYRICS WITH BLACK AND WHITE PHOTO'S OF NICK.  NON UK ISSUES CAME WITH THAT AS AN INNER SLEEVE, LEADING TO SPLIT AND TORN EDGES. CONTERFEIT COPIES MIGHT HAVE PHOTO COPIES OF THE ORIGINAL LABELS, BUT THEY WILL NOT BE SOFTLY TEXTURED LIKE THESE AND THE FAKES DO NOT HAVE THESE SUPERB ORIGINAL LYRICS INNERS.   Why on earth would Joe Boyd're-issue any Nick Drake album on colour vinyl?   He of all people know that would risk substandard   sound quality, the greatest skill went into presenting these rare tracks in the maximum clarity as it was!  I once again urge all buyers and sellers to boycot anyone involved with counterfeiting and the sale of counterfeit records on ebay or at record fairs, especially if they contain Nick Drake's music.   If nobody buys their junk....they will soon stop making them!   The same applies to the open sale of fake Demo labels, boycott the seller, better still, complain to ebay. THE INSERT IS IN UNUSED/UNHANDLED AND UNAGED, IN  MINT- CONDITION.   The 'minus' is unneccessary really because there had to be a gentle record impression after being inside and alongside the record for the last 27 years. PRINTED ON ALL THE UK COVER'S BOTTOM EDGES IS 'Hannibal Records Ltd.' LONDON P.O BOX ADDRESS  WITH   THE USA DISTRIBUTER'S  'Carthage Records'  ADDRESS IN NEW JERSEY, DIRECTLY UNDERNEATH.   THE COVER HAS  A GLOSSY TOP SURFACE COATING, UNUSED WITH THE TRAITS OF STANDING IN STORAGE FOR ALL   THOSE YEARS.  A RECORD IMPRESSION WITH A FEW PAPER EDGE LINES AND THE SLIGHTEST POSSIBLE RUBBING   TO THE SPINE TIPS. IN OTHER WORDS....AUTHENTIC!   THE COVER IS IN EXCELLENT+++ / NEAR  MINT CONDITION. THE RECORD AND LABELS ARE PRISTINE AND BRAND NEW, IN UNPLAYED/ MINT CONDITION. SIDE 1 "Time Of No Reply" "I Was Made To Love Magic"   "Joey" "Clothes Of Sand" "Man In A Shed" "Mayfair" "Fly" SIDE 2 "The Thoughts Of Mary Jane" "Been Smoking Too Long" "Strange Meeting II" "Rider On The Wheel" "Black Eyed Dog" "Hanging On A Star" "Voice From A Mountain " The tragedy of a musical genius like Nick Drake dying so young, will always leave you wondering about the potential music he would have made had his life path determined he would live on.  That makes everything he did record between 1967 and 1974 very precious indeed and unbelievable apathy to the three albums recorded and released in his lifetime, has gradually turned to appreciation of true greatness. That only really started to happen around the mid-1980's, when finally the second release of the "Fruit Tree" box set contained all three albums, a book and a whole album of previously unreleased, unheard material, "Time Of No Reply."   1979 was Island's first attempt to rekindle and ignite interest, with the original "Fruit Tree" box set beautifully presenting the magical trio of, "Five Leaves Left", "Bryter Layter" and "Pink Moon" in a laminated box. As I found at record fairs, the only fans were from those original years during almost the whole of the 1980's and even early 1990's, I used to put Nick's originals into my Fairport Convention album section for several reasons.  Fairport 'adopted' Nick, encouraged him and even coaxed him onto a stage occasionally when he supported them, and even supporting Sandy Denny's when she was performing solo, they also played on his recording sessions, the music itself was very closely connected to Fairport in feel and intensity, with melody always the main priority.  They shared the same Island record company, recording studios, sound engineers and record producer in Joe Boyd, "Time Of No Reply" offers an opportunity to hear a rare alternate version of "The Thoughts Of Mary Jane", featuring another very young musical genius in late 1968, Richard Thompson's electric guitar makes really fascinating listening, not as just something overdubbed, but this is a completely different take or version.   With that gathering of interest in Nick Drake, it brought about a second release of  "Fruit Tree", this time a Hannibal box set and Joe Boyd also released this "Time Of No Reply" individually.   You will never find a Nick Drake LP or box set listed in chart positions but ever since 1986, Nick's stature has increased to the extent, it is correct to now say his music is widely loved and heard at last.   Back in 1969 when "Five Leaves Left" was issued, Nick Drake became another one of Island's prodigy's who made one of the most stunning LP's of all time, only to be ignored, except by a handful of people.  My brother was really into folk and to his greatest credit, bought "Five Leaves" on the first black black island logo, the week it was issued, we sat entranced listening to those awe inspiring tracks, a debut of true greatness.   As a very rare unplayed record, I will of course respect the ultimate condition and offer it unplayed, it would have been a real pleasure to describe  the the wonderful 14 tracks on "Time Of No Reply," in full with the music playing.  I can't just leave it in here so here's the basic info about where the tracks originated from.     The earliest track on this album as a purpose made studio recording, is "Mayfair", which pre-dated the "Five Leaves Left" LP's   recording by a month, in October 1968.   Moving forward to making that incredible debut LP, in November and December 1968,   "Time Of No Reply", "I Was Made To Love Magic", "Joey" and "Clothes Of Sand" are studio out-takes that were left unreleased    until 1986.  Recorded at home by Nick Drake as demo's in that period, before the "Five Leaves Left" recording sessions, 1967   to 1968; "Man In A Shed", "Fly", "Been Smoking Too Long" and "Strange Meeting II."   This is really the terminology of bootleg   collector's, but the process of recording songs and their fate as far as being officially released, was basically restricted to the   descriptive terms required to describe this album, except any live on stage recording...shame!  Next the alternate or different   versions of a song that was released,"The Thoughts Of Mary Jane", once again the track from the "Five Leaves Left" album that   was left unheard from the December 1968 recording's, with Fairport Convention's Richard Thompson playing the electric guitar.    Side 2's last four tracks, "Rider On The Wheel", "Black Eyed Dog", "Hanging On A Star" and "Voice From A Mountain", were all    reputed to be Nick Drake's final recording's shortly before his death, dating from February 1974 and they remained unheard until "Time Of No Reply" was released on Joe Boyle's label.   For the album's sound quality and bearing in mind four tracks were Demo's, I could not think of a better scenario than Joe Boyd mastering and compiling this very special album.  Another reason why I do not need to check the sound by playing the album. {Roy}   R & M RECORDS. My lifetime's love of music and records began at a very young age, the arrival of the Beatles and the 1960's decade   in general had a very profound effect. It was only natural to bring all my first hand experience of collecting vinyl   into becoming a professional record seller.  Over twenty years ago now we entered into the wonderful atmosphere of record fairs with the highest possible standards set. When the Internet became the world's new market place for   vinyl, in 2001 it was time to join ebay. Those standards were rigidly adhered to as they will always continue to be, the basics of honesty and integrity were very much part of the era the music I love originated in, so here is our friendly and very efficient service we are proud to provide; EVERY RECORD IS FULLY PLAYED AND COMES WITH A 'NO ARGUMENT' MONEY BACK GUARANTEE.   I USE GOOD OLD COMMON SENSE AS WELL AS A GLOBALLY ACCEPTED GRADING TERMINOLOGY   FROM THE U.K. "RECORD COLLECTOR PRICE GUIDE" BOOK. THERE IT CLEARLY STATES "Sound Quality" AFFECTS EVERY GRADING LEVEL AND THAT IS THE ONE AND ONLY POSSIBLE WAY TO ACCURATELY GRADE RECORDS. i.e. COMBINING A STRICT VISUAL INSPECTION WITH VERY CLOSELY LISTENING TO EVERY SECOND, UNLESS PERHAPS IN THE CASE OF GENUINELY UNPLAYED VINYL.  EVEN THEN WE STILL TAKE FULL RESPONSIBITY FOR A RECORD WHEN A CUSTOMER RECEIVES EITHER A SEALED OR AN UNPLAYED RECORD.   MY DESCRIPTIONS WILL ALWAYS BE 100% HONEST AND TOTALLY ACCURATE ON ALL GRADINGS FROM 'V.G.' ( VERY GOOD), TO THE ULTIMATE 'MINT' CONDITION. ANY QUESTIONS ON OUR ITEMS ARE WELCOMED AND WILL BE PROMPTLY REPLIED TO.   WE ARE FULLY EXPERIENCED AT SHIPPING WORLDWIDE AND NO EFFORT IS SPARED TO PROTECT RECORDS AND COVERS ETC.  WE WELCOME BIDDERS FROM ANY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. UNDER PAYPAL & EBAY'S GUIDELINES, ALL RECORDS WILL BE SENT VIA A FULLY INSURED TRACKABLE SERVICE. We have kept all our charges at the same level for years now, but due to the Post Office's new price increases, regretfully we will have to increase the cost of LP's, however, singles will remain unchanged.  Ebay were aware of that happening and have   increased their minimum postal cost for LP's to £7.00, that figure has been enforced by the UK Post Office and it will become our UK First Class, Recorded Delivery cost for albums up to the value of £46.   For LP's valued above £46, the cost will be £9, we are unhappy about either increase but our high standard of packaging has meant in 12 years of ebay trading, there has not been one record damaged, we are determined to maintain that in the present and future.
