Give Ireland back to the Irish, Don't make them have to take it away, Give Ireland back to the Irish, Make Ireland Irish today. Great Britain, you are tremendous, And nobody knows like me, But really, what are you doing In the land across the sea? Tell me how would you like it, If on your way to work, You were stopped by Irish soldiers? Would you lie down, do nothing? Would you give in, or go berserk? Give Ireland back to the Irish, Don't make them have to take it away, Give Ireland back to the Irish, Make Ireland Irish today. Great Britain and all the people, Say that all people must be free, Meanwhile back in Ireland, There's a man who looks like me. And he dreams of God and country, And he's feeling really bad, And he's sitting in a prison, Should he lie down, do nothing? Should he give in, or go mad? Give Ireland back to the Irish, Don't make them have to take it away Give Ireland back to the Irish, Make Ireland Irish today. Give Ireland back to the Irish, Don't make them have to take it away, Give Ireland back to the Irish, Make Ireland Irish today. PAUL McCARTNEY/WINGS:"Give Ireland Back To The Irish"/"Give Ireland Back To The Irish" Instr. Vers. RARE BANNED SINGLE, AUTHENTIC FIRST UK PRESSING, ISSUED 26th FEBRUARY,1972. CUSTOM PRINTED WHITE & GREEN APPLE / PARLOPHONE LABEL: R 5936. THIS SINGLE IS TYPICAL OF 1972, LIKE ALL THE BEATLES RECORDS AFTER THE 1968 "Lady Madonna" SINGLE, PAUL AND JOHN'S SOLO RECORDS WERE RELEASED ON THE APPLE LABEL..... JUST LIKE WHEN IN THE BEATLES, WITH A PARLOPHONE CATALOGUE NUMBER. ALSO, LIKE THE MUSIC PUBLISHING COMPANY SET UP BY DICK JAMES IN 1963 FOR ALL LENNON / McCARTNEY BEATLES COMPOSITIONS,"Give Ireland Back To The Irish" WAS STILL OWNED BY 'Northern Songs Ltd.' ONLY IN EARLY 1972, LEGAL BATTLE LINES HAD BEEN DRAWN UP IN COURT, JOHN AND PAUL WERE FIGHTING TO TRY AND FREE THEMSELVES FROM CONTRACTS SIGNED WHEN YOUNG, NAIVE AND HUNGRY FOR SUCCESS. THIS IS THE TEXT ON THE FIRST PRESSINGS, I WILL GIVE FURTHER DETAILS BELOW: Northern Songs Ltd. Copyright Also Claimed By Kidney Punch Music An Apple Record Manufactured in UK - Copyright 1972 MAITRIX: 7YCE 21627 - 1U / 7YCE 21628 - 1U EMI STAMPING CODES: GP 2 / GL 2 THERE WERE SEVERAL EMI TYPE 7" SLEEVES USED FOR "Give Ireland Back To The Irish" AND THE SAME APPLIES TO THE LATER 1972, "Hi, Hi, Hi,"/"C Moon" SINGLE. THIS HAS A YELLOW CUSTOM MADE SLEEVE, WITH "Wings" IN BOLD BLOCK LETTERING ON BOTH SIDE'S TOP LEFT CORNERS. SHAPED EXACTLY LIKE ALL EMI SLEEVES BEFORE BEING PRINTED ON, INCLUDING THE BLACK APPLE 7" SLEEVES. ONE SIDE HAS A VERTICAL AND A HORIZONTAL FLIPBACK EDGE WITH ROUND ENDING'S, PLUS A DISTINCTIVELY SHAPED RECORD ACCESS SECTION ON THE TOP An unfaded deep yellow without any seam splits, the record was unremoved in 46 years, there is of course an impression with some related light creases. Plus some storage traits, but for a 1972 thin paper sleeve, still perfectly strong and presentable, an extremely rare unplayed first UK pressing inside, does place the correct perspective onto natural storage signs. Even that is minor, very light rubbing to the extremities and some ruffles but the flipback edges are perfectly flat and unworn. To sum up how well preserved and unused this actually was, the inside is still the original unaged pure white colour, as seen in the picture showing the overlapping top opening of the side with the record access. THE ORIGINAL 1972 "Wings" SLEEVE IS IN EXCELLENT+++ / NEAR MINT CONDITION. THE TEXTURED WHITE BACKGROUND LABELS ARE STILL THE 1972 PURE WHITE, VIRTUALLY WITHOUT ANY AGEING. SINCE LEAVING THE PRESSING PLANT THIS HAS NEVER LEFT THE SLEEVE, THERE ARE NO SPINDLE OR HANDLING TRACES ON EITHER SIDE'S LABELS. LIKE THE PRISTINE LABELS, THE VINYL IS ALSO LIKE BRAND NEW, WITHOUT ANY MARKS, SCUFFS OR ANY HANDLING I COULD FIND, IF THERE IS ANY IT HAS TO BE INVISIBLE! THE RECORD IS IN UNPLAYED MINT CONDITION. This is only the third time I have ever bought an unplayed UK "Give Ireland Back To The Irish" since.....February, 1972! The rarity of that must be maintained for the next owner to make the decision, retaining the ultimate condition or playing it. During the early 1970's and particularly when Paul 'dared' to leave his solo status and formed a new band,Wings, unparalleled and unjustified, viscous criticism descended on him from the media. Mostly based around his gifted ability to write such beautiful ballads, just one part of his songwriting genius, but suddenly he was being castigated in the press for being, 'Mr.Conventional.' John Lennon's "How Do You Sleep" on "Imagine" was used as the excuse to join a 'witch hunt,' when coming from John, that was just an old once close friend venting some built up frustration, mostly created in the law courts where the demise of the Beatles was played out. British rock journalists were not old school friends who had been through the most mind blowing experiences of the Beatles struggles and unbelievable triumphs. They were certainly not a 'John Lennon' and they had no right to pour scorn on just about everything Paul said in interviews or even worse, recorded and released. After making the first Wings LP "Wildlife" in 1971, the events in 1972 were a much more accurate picture of Paul McCartney's social conscious commitments and positively unconventional, anti-establishment lifestyle. In the troubled war zone like Northern Ireland of this period, British troops had moved in and a state of near martial law led to the terrible tragedy of them gunning down and killing civilians, it became known in January,1972 as the 'Bloody Sunday Massacre.' News cameras graphically filmed the slaughter as it happened and the horrific newsreel was beamed into our homes, showing a brave priest kneeling down, leaning over and trying to protect the bloodied bodies from the still flying bullets. Paul watched the same sickening scenes and was moved to write, record and release a single in an angry but thought out protest, making the most overtly political statement of his whole career. Across the Atlantic, where John and Yoko had recently moved to New York, Lennon watched that same newsreel and he immediately wrote "Luck Of The Irish," an equally scathing damnation of the British government. No communications had passed between them and if ever a 'John Lennon and Paul McCartney composing re-union happened, it was the pair being on exactly the same wavelength and reacting by doing the only thing they knew how, writing a song and having it released. John Lennon's song was released on the "Sometime In New York City" double album in the same 1972 , as an LP track he was not forced to pull punches and being Lennon, he really let rip, his lyrics included the line, "While the bastards commit genocide." Paul's lyrics were just as strong, but without any obvious swearing to prevent it from being played and heard on the radio. Never the less, it was controversial enough and also demanded the British troops were withdrawn, it was banned by the BBC and the IBA, Paul was really annoyed that ban prevented people hearing such an important and major song. He reacted by writing some music to the nursery rhyme, "Mary Had A Little Lamb," in effect saying; "Okay, now try and ban these lyrics!" That was released in the following June, of course the music press had a field day over it and gloated about the 'man who once wrote "Yesterday", totally misunderstanding his gritty determination. The great Otis Redding had recorded "Mary Had A Little Lamb" as a straight nursery rhyme with a difference in the 1960's, no doubt Paul was aware of that and never once told the music press to remove the stigma from his version. Back to his so called 'straight lifestyle' in 1972, on arriving at the airport for a tour of Sweden with Wings, Paul was again arrested and busted for being in possession of cannabis, he spent some time in jail as well as receiving an £800 fine in a Swedish court. Jimi Hendrix had also experienced that in Sweden, for Paul and Linda that happened in August,1972, only one month later in September, their Scottish farm home was raided by the police and Paul was again arrested for being in possession of cannabis, "Let me roll it" indeed! Technically released on the Applel label but in reality, 'R 5936' was still EMI's Parlophone catalogue number and not Apple's, in early 1972 this was right in the middle of the Beatles's recent 'divorce' being dragged through courts, an undignified spectacle of these great artists facing legal battles. Every song written by Paul or John as solo artists was still subject to being owned by 'Northern Songs.' Paul cleverly tried to get round that by adding Linda's married name to the writing credit to now look like the lawyers occupying their time and money as 'McCartney and McCartney', to make sure, it was 'Produced By The McCartney's'. Nowhere on the record did he use his christian name 'Paul,' you see can that in my label pictures, also how those legal battles had begun in earnest, 'Copyright Also Claimed By Kidney Punch Music' was Paul fighting to own his own song. In boxing terms, a 'kidney punch' is illegal, so contesting 'Northern Songs' stranglehold on the Lennon / McCartney writing partnership, signed in 1963, that no longer existed now, 'Kidney Punch Music' was read out in court! In spite of all the intensive pressure and endless litigation, his sense of humour never deserted him in those very trying times, no doubt that barbed comment about actions taken by 'Northern Songs' caused amusement out in the courtroom. The variety of sleeves used for "Give Ireland Back To The Irish" now makes four types, I have of course sold a re-issue pressing with totally different text on the labels, the 1972 text was so unique it acts to identify UK first pressings. I better not get the much later re-issue's altered text and concentrate ont he record in front of me, this is complicated enough. I could actually write a book about this fascinating single, I'm sure one day someone will, not yet though because I believe there will be a few more variations that will surface. When EMI were courting legalities with every solo Lennon and McCartney record issued in that unique period, just before the music publishing problems were finally settled, phone calls to the label printers would have been a constant round of checking the precise wording used. This has a yellow sleeve with "Wings" printed in black, also a standard 1972 Apple sleeve, a plain black one and finally a plain white type, but they had one thing in common though. They were the same very distinctive shape, a horizontal and vertical flipback edge on one side, with a shaped cut record access on the top opening. I know some people like to have fixed rules for items like this, but the fact is the late 60's and the early 70's, were basically still the same period. A time when set patterns were not necessarily followed, so quite why such unrealistic views are imposed onto the most unconventional era of the entire 20th century, is a mystery to me! 'Expect the unexpected' and you will have the authentic items, ebay is now being over run with fake / 'repro' 7" sleeves, for the Beatles, you have fake green Parlophone and even black Apple 7" sleeves, fake 12" LP black Apple inner sleeves, fake "Let It Be" trays and outside sleeves, fake UK Fan Club Christmas sleeves and inserts, fake "White Album" posters and four prints, fake "Lady Madonna" single inserts, etc. etc. Personal computers attached to printers has seen endless fake Demo's, Promo's and acetates, the photo copying of genuine record company notepaper, flyers, posters and stickers have reached epedemic proportions. If you buy any of them, report it to ebay because they stress no counterfeit items can be sold, I keep seeing them on ebay conning buyers who lack experience, now on a huge scale. The single's labels were unlike any of the standard green/white Apple halves, they have a white background to a naturally Irish green printing, including clover leaves around the rims. They are both in immaculate condition, the 1973 pure white with all printing still like brand new. Not having any spindle traces is remarkable for a 46 year old single, a stunning looking record and one I must offer in the ultimate unplayed, true Mint condition. {Roy} R & M RECORDS.
