Run devil run, the angels having fun, Making winners out of sinners, better leave before it's done. When he gets through, he'll be coming after you, Listen what I'm saying to you,   Run, run devil run. By a swamp in Alabama in the cold in the damp, Sitting reading by the light of a kerosene lamp, Lives a holly roller with a mission on her mind, Got to spread the word to anybody she can find, You can hear her screaming any time in night or day, This is what she says to keep the demons away. Run devil run, the angels having fun, Making winners out of sinners, better leave before it's done. When he gets through, he'll be coming after you, Listen what I'm saying to you,   Run, run devil run. Her brother and her sister said that she brought them down, Stepping on the bus that was heading to town, There they started drinking, they got into a fight, The sheriff introduced them to the jailhouse for a night, When the holy roller came to town to pay the bail, This is what she sang as she was leaving the jail.... Run devil run, the angels having fun, Making winners out of sinners, better leave before it's done. When he gets through, he'll be coming after you, Listen what I'm saying to you,   Run, run devil run. Well by the middle of the summer they were back in the shack, Picking cotton for a living keep 'em on the right track, Visiting the neighbours trying to spread the good news, Singing gospel music with a hint of the blues, All of them determined to deliver the goods, Now you you hear the music coming out on the woods. Run devil run, the angels having fun, Making winners out of sinners, better leave before it's done. When he gets through, he'll be coming after you, Listen what I'm saying to you,   You'd better run, run devil run,   You'd better run, run devil run. PAUL McCARTNEY:"Run Devil Run" LP.  EXTREMELY RARE UK VINYL PRESSING, 4th DECEMBER 1999. Among the rarest Paul McCartney albums as a UK first pressing on vinyl, the labels claim this was made in 'EU', I do not believe that was true, the maitrix do not conform to a faceless, unknown pressing plant somewhere vaguely inside Europe.  They are in EMI's precise configuration and the stamped details perfectly match their stamping machine from way, way back down all the decades to 1982.  That was when all EMI's stamped details were Incorporated into the run-out grooves position at 6 o'clock , the same postion's used from before the birth of the Beatles, in other words, on the original 1950's purple and gold Parlophone label records, after all "Run Devil Run" was also recorded in and mastered in Abbey Road studios.  For me, that also means questioning the bar code's other standard text, 'Printed in EU,' records will always be about personal opinions, I am not exactly one to just accept something just because it's in print. I currently have a 1982 Beatles 12" version of "Love Me Do" with the maitrix of both side's displayed on ebay, 17 years earlier in the very year EMI introduced their combined maitrix and stamping codes.  You can very clearly see the same EMI pressing plant stamping machine and configuration was used for  "Love Me Do" in 1982, as  this "Run Devil Run" LP in 1999.  Amusingly, by Paul requesting vintage 1950's purple and gold labels for "Run Devil Run", the left   side of the labels has the incorrect "Made in EU", but the right side of the centre hole underneath the '£' Parlophone logo, is; "Made In Gt. Britain."  One way or another, justice was done, examining what is in front of me without preconceptions, always was, and it always will be, the most essential method of arriving at correct conclusions for records, CD's and memorabilia.  Just relying on someone else's verdict is the worst possible way to approach collectible items, you cannot develop your own instinct and are left wide open to being conned by counterfeit items.  Fakes and counterfeit's exist for all collectible and potentially valuable original, authentic items, reading from a text book or internet site will' tick most of the boxes', the crooks who make fakes rely on that, however small or apparently insignificant details are, they separate fakes from authentic items. The acute rarity of this major Paul McCartney vinyl album, as sold in Britain the 4th December,1999, will no doubt soon see "Run Devil Run" appearing as a counterfeit copy on ebay.  Right now every single Beatles 'new' title album, pressed in such small number from   1988 to "Love", can be found right now on ebay as counterfeit/fakes, including all three of the "Anthology" series are available   daily.  Not only available, in such limitless amounts, those conning the innocent now have a permanent listing running seven days   a week, a ridiculous situation, because they are obviously being made very cheaply and poorly without quality control restraints.   There are many ways to identify "Run Devil Run" and as only my second ever listing on ebay of the vinyl album, 'Made In EU' is in   fact where all the fakes are coming from!  Ironic really, I will provide definitive identification of the UK first pressings, the   reason I started by stating I do not believe it was  pressed or printed in 'EU' and I intend to prove that!  Come to think of it, on ebay alone, including this second LP today, I have sold more CD promo versions and limited edition singles in a red record   case, than the UK vinyl!   So few were vinyl versions made in 1999, the details simply have to be the same for every UK pressing   and no present or future counterfeit/fake will have them. 1950's RETRO PURPLE & GOLD PARLOPHONE LABEL: 522 3511 '522 3511' is specified on the bar code as the UK catalogue number, as usual the spine contains where that number originated   from in the overall scheme of vinyl editions.  The actual placement of the digits is different in the designated 'parent' catalogue   number.  If anyone thinks British 1960's vinyl was complex for the indexing, that pales alongside relatively recent records, but   nothing that cannot be de-coded and very easily understood, this is the 'parent' number on the bar code and on the spine;       1.)  Bar Code: 7243  5  22351  1 7 2.)  Spine: 7243 522351 17 THE MAITRIX IS POSITIVELY IN EMI'S FAMOUS MACHINE STAMPED FORMAT WITH RAISED LETTERS & DIGITS;   Now keep your eyes on the above alternatives, then check out the UK catalogue numbre and digest the UK pressing's maitrix prefix,   as well as EMI's unmistakable suffix format for a first UK pressing;   SIDE 1:  522 3511  A - 01 - 1 - 1   SIDE 2:  522 3511  B - 01 - 1 - 1   With so much to show in pictures I still made sure both side's maitrix can be see in close-up, here you have definitive proof the   UK records were pressed independently of any other European country, how could that be possible with EMI's stamping machine   unless it was shipped to an Eastern European country?  Why do that when just down the road from Abbey Road, EMI's pressing plant   was available to produce one of the smallest batches of records, ever known for such a major artist?  Please keep that '522 3511'   in mind because I am not quite finished with the exclusivity of those seven digits.   By 1999 it was common practice to have picture labels without track listing's, Paul's urgent need to make a rock album and to   recapture the very feel of the era that influenced the Beatles and just about everything that followed, came into play.  A similar   scenario surfaced for his "Pipes Of Peace" album in 1983, Side 1 had a replica pre-Beatles era, 1950's Parlophone syle label, a   purple background to the gold coloured printing.  26 years later in 1999, Paul returned to the same nostalgic design for this   "Run Devil Run" album and the associated vinyl singles, in 1983, they were there purely for their aesthetic value, unlike 1999,   when both labels were retro designs, this time to pay homage to the late 1950's rock & roll era.  Paul was always a strong enough   character to insist every album he has ever made was pressed on vinyl, so did George Harrison and John Lennon would have done   the same.  Paul made certain the artwork on all his covers and inserts, was nothing less than stunning and so were the labels on    the records!     If anyone reading this has or has seen the "Run Devil Run" Limited Edition retro flip-lid singles box, containing every track on   the LP as 'A'&'B' sides with a fold-out booklet, that was surely the finest ever presentation of vinyl singles ever known.  Fans were also treated to a bonus track not on the album, "Fabulous," this album really had Paul's fullest attention.  All the singles   had the same label design as the LP's labels , even the 7" Parlophone sleeves were specially made in the same design as 1950's    singles sleeves, the only concession to 1999 was a CD booklet was included with the singles.   You could hardly fit this wonderful   12"  "Run Devil Run" inner sleeve inside the singles box!       The timing of this album no doubt had an effect on Paul, if not a real impact and that acted as the spur to urgently get into the   Abbey Road studios and record the tracks as quickly as possible.  The spontaneity of that mirrored how in 1969, John and Paul urgently recorded "The Ballad Of John & Yoko",John also wanted to quickly record the song, get it pressed and into record shops.   Just  the two of them worked in Abbey Road, George was on holiday and Ringo was making a film, so Paul played the drums and   between them, they played all the instruments, 30 years later Paul had other reasons to record without lengthy sessions and just   get to work.  "Run Devil Run" was the first album he made after Linda's death, she had been there with him right from his first   solo recording's before the Beatles broke up.  It must have been really heart breaking to be recording an album without Linda at   his side and only the music he loved so deeply, became his incentive and an inspiration all over again.  If only I could concentrate   on these really important and historic circumstances surrounding the recording and release of such a fantastic record, oh well,   all the pressing details were never more vital and my experience with records must remain focused.... on digits and bar codes!     THE COVER IS LITERALLY LIKE BRAND NEW, 12 YEARS OLD OR NOT, THERE IS NOT A BLEMISH IN SIGHT.     At FIRST GLANCE IT MIGHT LOOK LIKE THERE A PRINTED YELLOW STAR ON THE FRONT COVER, I RAN OUT OF SPACE   FOR ANOTHER CLOSE UP PICTURE OF THAT.  IT HAS A DIFFERENT SMOOTHER FEEL THAN THE TEXTURED SURFACE OF   THE COVER AND WILL ONLY EVER BE FOUND ON  AUTHENTIC UK COVERS. THE STAR IS TRANSLUCENT AND CONTAINS   A NUMBER IN TINY PRINTING, A 'STARBURST' STYLE STICKER HAS THIS PRINTED IN BLACK: Paul McCartney 5223511 There it is again!  The '5223511' catalogue number is exclusive to the UK pressing, now, why would a sticker that was added as an   after thought because Paul's name was not on the front, also include the UK catalogue number, if it was not printed in the UK? Surely EMI, who distributed the album, did not ask a European printing firm to supply stickers after the covers had been printed?   Economics alone would have made that utter nonsense, because of how few were needed, the same printer who made the cover would   have supplied them, both the vinyl singles and LP items simply had to originate from an English printer!   The shape and colour,   the same 'handwritten' style 'Paul McCartney' was printed in on the LP cover, was identical to the yellow star sticker found on   the "Run Devil Run" Limited Edition flip-lid box singles set, that sticker had details of the box set.   The Promo/Press pack folder   for the "Run Devil Run"CD sold during the last Christmas period was positively British.... it also had a yellow star with black   printing in the centre.       A blank sticker was required for the LP cover, printing the UK '5223511' catalogue number was not required for the purpose of   identifying Paul McCartney, but protocol alone accounts for the inclusion.    AFTER 15 YEARS STORAGE AND NORMAL HANDLING, I SHOULD NOW BE DETAILING WEAR, BUT THERE IS LITERALLY   NOTHING TO DETAIL, AN ASTONISHING 'DAY OF ISSUE; COVER, IN TRUE MINT CONDITION.     THERE WAS NO RECORD IMPRESSION BECAUSE THE RECORD WAS STORED OUTSIDE THE COVER AND IN ANOTHER   INNER SLEEVE, AMAZING!   THE CUSTOM MADE "Run Devil Run" INNER SLEEVE WAS MADE FROM SOFT, THIN PAPER,   SO VERY EASILY SPLIT AND TORN.   From day one, the heavyweight record was placed into a plain white inner sleeve to preserve the original like new, which indeed   this is!  There is not even an impression from the massively heavyweight record and there is no ageing or fading to the colour &   black and white pictures, or the extensive track details written by Paul.  All details can be seen for both sides in my pictures,   especially the incredible condition of this superb item, try reading the miniturised CD book!   THE INNER SLEEVE IS IN UNUSED, AS NEW,  MINT CONDITION.     THE RECORD IS IN UNPLAYED, MINT CONDITION. SIDE 1 "Blue Jean Bop" (Gene Vincent/Morris Levy)   "She Said Yeah" (Larry Williams) "All Shook Up" (Otis Blackwell/Elvis Presley) "Run Devil Run" (Paul McCartney) "No Other Baby" (Bishop/Watson) "Lonesome Town" (Knight) "Try Not To Cry" (Paul McCartney) "Movie Magg" (Carl Perkins) SIDE 2 "Brown Eyed Handsome Man" (Chuck Berry) "What It Is" (Paul McCartney) "Coquette" (Green/Kahn/Lombardo) "I Got Stung" (Hill/Schroeder) "Honey Hush" (Joe Turner) "Shake A Hand" (Morris)  "Party" (Robinson) Paul McCartney - Hofner bass, additional guitars & vocals. David Gilmour - Fender Esquire guitar on all tracks, Gibson lap steel guitar on "Run Devil Run" & backing vocals   Mick Green - Fender Stratocaster   Pete Wingfield - keyboards   Geraint Watkins - piano on "All Shook Up" and "Try Not to Cry"   Ian Paice (Deep Purple) - drums   Dave Mattacks (Fairport Convention) - drums on "All Shook Up" and "Try Not to Cry"     Recorded 1st March - 5th May, 1999 At Abbey Road Studios.   Produced By Chris Thomas & Paul McCartney. One final pressing detail, I have sold two of the Limited Box Sets of singles on ebay, when describing them I made the same point   about the singles.  All the records were positively pressed by EMI in England, the labels hada standard "Made In EU" of the era,   but once again the maitrixes had the machine stamping distinctively exclusive to EMI's pressing plant in Hayes, Middlesex. I have been typing and concentrating so hard on the pressing info, I cannot now include the full background to the recording I   would have preferred, I did  manage to slip in a few though, the collector in me has to emerge in between all that concentration!   The Beatles always warmed up by playing the rock & roll or blues songs that inspired them as teenagers to become musicians, John   Lennon always insisted the greatest song ever written was Gene Vincent's "Be-Bop-A-Lu-La."  John and Paul recorded entire solo albums of their favourite rock and roll songs, Paul had more time to repeat that several times and in a Lennon like mood, he cut all sixteen tracks on this set in Abbey Road Studios, where else?  I feel sure in 1999, the spirit of the Beatles hung heavy over the proceedings, playing lead guitar was another famous 1960's musician who was rather familiar with those hallowed studios, Pink Floyd's Dave Gilmour, the full line-up was in the LP credits.   Exactly 30 years earlier, the Beatles were struggling to get an album's worth of material recorded under the glare of the camera's filming for the "Let It Be"or "Get Back" film, they were nearing the end of the road and petty arguments were simmering under the surface. Long beards made them appear far older than they actually were, the 1960's decade had taken a large slice of their lives and youth, the only way they could 'come together' was playing endless 'oldies', that melted the ice and smiles returned as they rocked together again, many of their jams ended up as finished tracks for the film and the album.   The importance of an Elvis Presley track like "All Shook Up" to them, was beyond words and had John lived, he would have loved Paul's full hearted homage to the music that gave birth to the Beatles and rock today, no doubt, he would have made several more volumes of "Rock'N'Roll" by now.     I was really pleased by the clarity of my label pictures,, they are like brand new and have never been near a spindle.  The bar   code on the back instructs you to see the labels for the country of manufacture, they do have, "Made In Gt. Britain" but that is   how the original 1950's labels came.  So did the red Parlophone label "Love Me Do" and "Please Please Me" singles, so that is not   why I believe the record and the printing was made in The UK, which is in fact in the 'EU',  I rest my case!     I included a picture of the bar code because they do contain a wealth of information, rare records like this should always be   accurately documented.  If I can't play the record, that is the least I can do, an unplayed record and will remain so until the   next owner makes a decision about playing or preserving this ultimate condition.  I always add this to unplayed records, any   near invisible/invisible handling signs will be from the pressing plant, or as is often the case, a direct imprint from the metal   stamping discs per side of the record. I could not find anything that justifies adding that, there were no handling traces on the   the labels or the vinyl.  A fantastic, ultimate condition UK "Run Devil Run" LP and  there was no need to discuss the tracks when   Paul McCartney wrote so extensively about them, individually on the inner sleeve.   {Roy}   R & M RECORDS. My lifetime's love of music and records began at a very young age, the arrival of the Beatles and the 1960's decade   in general had a very profound effect. It was only natural to bring all my first hand experience of collecting vinyl   into becoming a professional record seller.  Over twenty years ago now we entered into the wonderful atmosphere of record fairs with the highest possible standards set. When the Internet became the world's new market place for   vinyl, in 2001 it was time to join ebay. Those standards were rigidly adhered to as they will always continue to be, the basics of honesty and integrity were very much part of the era the music I love originated in, so here is our friendly and very efficient service we are proud to provide; EVERY RECORD IS FULLY PLAYED AND COMES WITH A 'NO ARGUMENT' MONEY BACK GUARANTEE.   I USE GOOD OLD COMMON SENSE AS WELL AS A GLOBALLY ACCEPTED GRADING TERMINOLOGY   FROM THE U.K. "RECORD COLLECTOR PRICE GUIDE" BOOK.
