Richard & Linda Thompson ‎– I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight Carthage CGLP 4407 - 1974In 1974, Richard Thompson and the former Linda Peters released their first album together, and it was nothing short of a masterpiece, the starkly beautiful refinement of the promise of Thompson's solo debut, Henry the Human Fly. In Linda Thompson, Richard found a superb collaborator and a world-class vocalist; She possessed a voice as clear and rich as Sandy Denny's, but with a strength that could easily support Richard's often weighty material, and she proved capable of tackling anything presented to her, from the delicately mournful "Has He Got a Friend for Me" to the gleeful cynicism of "The Little Beggar Girl." And while Richard had already made clear that he was a songwriter to be reckoned with, on this LP he went from strength to strength. While the album's mood is decidedly darker than anything he'd recorded before, the sorrow of "Withered and Died," "The End of the Rainbow," and "The Great Valerio" spoke not of self-pity but of the contemplation of life's cruelties by a man who, at 25, had already been witness to more than his share. And though Thompson didn't give himself a guitar showcase quite like "Roll Over Vaughn Williams" on Henry the Human Fly, the brilliant solos that punctuated many of the songs were manna from heaven for any guitar enthusiast. While I Want To See The Bright Lights may be the darkest music of their career, in this chronicle of pain and longing they were able to forge music of striking and unmistakable beauty; if the lyrics often ponder the high stakes of our fate in this life, the music offered a glimpse of the joys that make the struggle worthwhile. (ALL MUSIC) THE VINYL IS EXCELLENT MINUS SHOWING VERY LITTLE EVIDENCE OF PLAY WITH NO DAMAGE SHOWING A FEW LIGHT HAIRLINES AS SEEN ON VERY SHINY VINYL UNDER BRIGHT LIGHTS - VERY NICELY CARED FORPLAYS BEAUTIFULLY WITH A LITTLE LIGHT STATIC BETWEEN TRACKS THE MIDWEIGHT JACKET- IS IN VG+ CONDITION - IT SHOWS NO SPLITS NO WRITING OR PRICE NAME LABELS TO JACKET - LIGHT RING WEAR NOTICEABLE - A BOTTOM CORNER DING BY SPINE AND LIGHT BUMPING TO EDGES AND SPINE SPINE IS READABLE (SEE PHOTOS) THE LABELS ARE IN EXCELLENT SHAPE WITH NO SPINDLE MARKINGS SEEN (SEE PHOTO) A NICE RECORD RECOMMENDED (SEE PHOTOS)Some incredible songs on this 1967 album from composer Reid King who married the Brazilian sound withpopular music of that era to produce an album that should have really taken off then, but due to the strangesetup of Canterbury Records who were in business to lose money for a Mattel tax shelter, the album was allowedto die on the vine by Canterbury when it started to take off with airplay and sales. Reid King went on to becomeone of the foremost composers of contemporary music for the gut-string guitar.FINALLY ONE LAST WORD RE HAIRLINES, IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND ANY NON SEALED RECORD WITHOUT THEM, MANY HAD THEM FROM NEW. MOSTLY THEY ARE A RESULT OF STORAGE AND USE AND USUALLY HAVE LITTLE IMPACT ON THE SOUND QUALITY. THE SAME GOES FOR BACKGROUND NOISE, UNFORTUNATELY ALL RECORDS WILL HAVE SOME AND THIS VARIES AND REFLECTS THE PRESSING QUALITY. Most records have production marks where someone touched or moved the vinyl while it was still semi-soft. These marks look like smudges, but are not scratches or "paper scuffs" and do not usually sound. Untouched vinyl from newly-opened records have these marks. RECOMMENDED!FULLY GUARANTEED!CONDITION - DESCRIPTIONMintThis means absolutely new, never been played or out of its dust cover. In the case of LP's, a North American album will have to be factory sealed Take Note: European and Japaneses albums were never shrink wrapped! Near Mint - Looks rarely played, very shiny with no visible marks Excellent to Excellent Plus - A disc is super clean, with only very light visible marks that do not hamper play Excellent minus is a disc that is excellent except it may have some markings that do not show up in the playing VG+ AND VG++ - A Disc that is still in good shape, but will have some hairlines and minor superficial scratches with none deep that will not hamper play VG A Disc that has minor scratches, some can be felt with a fingernail and can be heard as surface noise but nothing to spoil the overall enjoyment play VG Minus - A record that has been well enjoyed, Still playable with minor imperfections such as light scratches, visible scuffing etc. IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded. Records are graded under bright lights or discrete sunlight - In the case of visibly possible harmful scratches, the record will be tested and sound quality noted. Many vintage (1955-70) records will play fine with visible damage due to superior vinyl and better pressings.
