Rockpile – 1970s rock’n’roll fanzine Original issues 1 – 9, all 1971 Fanzines are most strongly associated with the “DIY” ethic of punk rock sub-culture in the late 1970s. Some of the most well known examples of all music fanzines, such as Sniffin’ Glue and Ripped & Torn date from that period. The idea of music fanzines was not original though and punk-zines are predated by a handful of fanzines dedicated to rock’n’roll, such as Kommotion, Bam Balam and the fanzine here, Rockpile. Rockpile focused on classic rock’n’roll but the content was broad enough to encompass R&B, blues, soul and country music – particularly where those genres overlapped with rock’n’roll. Producing a fanzine – whether for music or football – was an absolute labour of love. In those pre-internet days, all the research would have to be done from books, record company catalogues and primary research material such as studio session records. It is a fair bet that at least some of the content now widely available on specialist music sites online, was originally put together by a dedicated fanzine editor. Not only would a fanzine editor have to source the content, he would also have to copy-type submissions from writers, operate the duplicator, collate and staple the fanzines and go down to the post office to send them out! Issues 1 – 9 of Rockpile are included here. All were published in 1971 from the editor’s home address at Gravesend in Kent. I’m not sure how long the magazine was issued for. Besides articles on all sorts of performers from the well known to the obscure, the magazine also include discographies, record reviews, reminiscences, comment from readers, and adverts from record dealers. All these issues are complete as far as I can see. Most have 18 pages. They are printed on quite heavy paper of foolscap size. Foolscap was a pretty old-fashioned size even back then but maybe it was the only size that the second-hand duplicator would take! Foolscap is bigger than A4 at 13 inches by 8 inches (33 x 20 cms approx). The original cost was 90p for a subscription of six issues. That price presumably included postage! The condition is OK. All the fanzines have been well read. There are some stains here and there, and the kinds of odd creases that you might expect. Some have been re-stapled because the back or front page has come off. Issues nos. 1- 3 and no. 8 have a plain paper cover and are rubber-stamped “re-issue” (see images). This means of course that they were back copies obtained in the original year of issue or thereabouts – not that they are modern reprints. Apart from replacement of the picture cover with these stamped covers, these re-issue copies have the same content as the original issues. Note that I have other rock'n'roll fanzines from this period that I will be listing in the next couple of days. Click on See Other Items above if you would like to see them. UK Postage and packing: £3.00 International postage and packing: Postage charges to international destinations are given below. All postage prices quoted (UK and international) are maximum charges. If postage and packing costs less than these estimates, I will refund the difference after posting (subject to the difference being £1.00 or more. Unless otherwise indicated, the postage prices I give in the listing are for a tracked and signed-for service, as required by eBay. If however, winning buyers would prefer cheaper options, I am always happy to help with that if I can. Please contact me for a quote. I hope this description has given you enough to go on but should you require any further information, or more images, please do e-mail. Please also look carefully at the hi-res photos – they are part of the description. Thanks for your interest in this auction and good luck if you decide to bid. Please note: I will not respond to requests to close the auction early regardless of the value of the offer made. Ending early is contrary to both the principle and spirit of an auction. It is also unfair to other eBayers who may be watching the auction intending to bid at a later time.
