Except for a few obscure bootlegs, these two versions have NEVER before or after been released to the public. The versions included here are truly different. It is not just a case of different mixes – these are DIFFERENT TAKES altogether. You will detect a major difference between the official versions and those included here within five seconds from the start of the songs. This take of "Brown Sugar" has rhythm section pushed all the way into the foreground, to the point where bass and drums are literally in-your-face. Bobby Keyes' famous sax solo in the middle of the song is COMPLETELY MISSING; Lead guitar solo also appears to be missing; only Keith Richard’s rhythm guitar is there, but Mick Taylor’s fretwork appears to be either missing or is mixed-out beyond detection. Vocal track seems to be the same as the released version. On "Wild Horses", Mick Taylor’s guitar, notably the intricate soloing by the end of the song, is also missing; the song appears to be somewhat shorter than the released version; but the single biggest - and most obvious - difference is in Mick Jagger`s vocal track. It is absolutely clear that this is a COMPLETELY different take of the vocal track than the album version; Mick sings in a wonderfully dramatic, passionate, soulful manner – and we feel very strongly that his vocal take on this version is far superior to the one released on regular versions of "Hot Rocks"Over the years, we`ve heard many interesting stories about how this incredible rarity came to being: from this being an attempt by Allen Klein, the then-manager of the Rolling Stones to extract one final bit of studio material before the band established their own label, to the Stones deliberately supplying half-baked takes to Klein, to the sheer incompetence of the pressing plant. Bruce Eder, a regular contributor to the All Music Guide has beenasked about what he thought of this mispressing , and he concurred that this appears to be a simple case of human error: it looks like the pressing plant (“SHELLEY” found in the deadwax on sides 3 and 4) inadvertently used the test- or demo stamper which should have been discarded. Eder should know – he was a one-time London/Abkco employee and he worked for Allen Klein for many years. This album was voted one of top-200 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted by Paul Gambaccini, legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals (including Roy Carr, Jonathan Cott, Robert Christgau, Cameron Crowe, Chet Flippo, Ben Fong-Torres, Charlie Gillett, Greil Marcus, Murray the K., Lenny Kaye , Bruce Morrow (a/k/a "Cousin Brucie"), Tim Rice (of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Evita" fame), Lisa Robinson, Robert Shelton (who wrote liner notes for Bob Dylan's first album), Ed Ward, Joel Whitburn, Pete Wingfield, etc.). Who is "SHELLEY" (FOUND IN THE DEADWAX SIDES 3 AND 4)?This is indicative of an item from the Shelley products Ltd pressing plant (closed in the mid 1980's) of Long Island,NY and it makes a big difference on this double album Hot Rocks 1964-1971Upon its initial pressing (November 18, 1971), alternate versions of Brown Sugar and Wild Horses were included on the Hot rocks master plate. Since there was no clear references to their origin on the album cover, sleeve, or label, one must look at the trail-off vinyl (the smooth vinyl located nearest the disc label) look for the word "Shelley" (found on sides 3 and 4) and the date "11-18-71" (found only on side 4) It seems that this "alternate pressing" was soon pulled in favor of a set which contained the single versions of Sugar and Horses. VISUALLY GRADED : U VINYL CONDITION: (a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT++! This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. The vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new on sides 1 and 2. Light surface rub marks appear on sides 3 & 4 but for the most part, the vinyl looks quite strong without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections as in no scratches so here is how we rate the vinyl more specifically: Side One: NM Side Two: NM Side Three: VG++ Side Four: VG++(b) The records come in their original London catalogue inner sleeves.(c) The records are pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic COVER CONDITION: WE GRADE THE COVER CONSERVATIVELY AS A STRONG VG++ No split seams, light ringwear on front cover (see pics) , no ringwear on back cover, very light edgewear in some places (nothing serious), no creases.NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:- No cut-out (drill) holes.- No cut-out corners- No saw-marks or indents- No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)- No yellowing from aging- No writing- No stamps- No tearing No peel-off marks- No stains- No mold or mildew spots- No stickers or labels- No water damage- No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or cuts.- No warping- No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover- No glue traces or wax residue.- No bar codes- No RIAA stamps or stickers.
