 MATRIX NUMBERS
Side One: T1-2215-H1
Side Two: T2-2215-J2 The Ghouls were a Capitol Records band-in-name-only project of producer/songwriter Gary Usher (sometime co-writer with Brian Wilson in the early 60′s). Dracula's Deuce is their (extremely coveted) sole release - featuring Hal Blaine (The Wrecking Crew), Chuck Girrard (of The Revells, Hondells, Mr. Gasser and The Weird-Ohs...), Richard Polodor on guitar and Rick Burns (The Dartells) on vocals. Rick Burns sings (or talk-sings in a style not too dissimilar to “Monster Mash”) faux early Beach Boys songs like “Be True To Your Ghoul” and “Dracula’s Deuce” which establishes the mid-60′s campy horror theme of the album. These tracks do their job just fine in creating a spooky, goofball, revved-up novelty theme. However... unassumingly, six of the the twelve tracks (in fact every other track) are great, moody and very effective instrumental surf-rock songs! “Dracula’s Theme” is perhaps one of the very finest slow surf rock numbers of it’s kind. So good in fact that it’s a shame it was only released on a novelty-theme album such as this where much of the audience who’d most appreciate it would probably never hear it. “Coffin Nails”, “Voo Doo Juice” and the very cool and exceptional “Weird Wolf” are all drenched in glistening reverb guitar with lots of moody organ. “Blood & Butter” and “Shake Rattle & Rot” add saxophone into the mix. The remaining vocal novelty-numbers "Monsterbilly Heaven", “Bela Be Good” (Johnny B. Goode), “Little Old Lady From Transylvania” (Pasadena) and the “Graveyard Shift” (with a trippy little organ solo) all take surf/hot rod rock to the haunted house. As we are all well aware, a whole sub genre of "Monster Surf" bands cropped up in the late 80's, early 90's, playing 1960's retro surf-camp ...it all dates back to this little gem right here: Dracula's Deuce. Even for those with no actual interest in the music itself - you’ve gotta love the early psych era cover art with the priceless photos of Dracula posing by his wheels. ...Very recommended for those so inclined.
