He studied at The Royal Conservatory of Music with Frank Hiron (saxophone) and Herbert Pye (clarinet). He pursued further woodwind studies with Dale Eisenhuth in Los Angeles in 1953.From 1945–1953 Toth played the alto saxophone in numerous dance bands in Toronto, including those led by Stan Patton, Bobby Gimby, and Trump Davidson. From 1952–1957 he co-led a 17-piece jazz band with trombonist Ross Culley and saxophonist Roy Smith. From 1956–1974 he studied orchestration with Phil Nimmons during which time he also played and recorded music as a member of Nimmons' jazz bands. From 1970–1990 he was a member of the Boss Brass, a group which often featured him on the alto saxophone in jazz ballads both in performance and on record. He also performed in Toronto clubs with his own jazz quartet. In the latter part of his career, he was highly active as a studio musician and record producer in Toronto.Toth's own discography includes the LPs The Music of Jerry (1969, CTL 477-5116), The Twelve Sides of Jerry Toth (1973, CTL 477-5171), and The Classic Jerry Toth (1976, CTLS-5201/United UALA-666G) by his orchestra, and Moment of Love (1972, Warner WSC 9008), by his singers, both essentially studio groups. The song 'Moment of Love,' written by Rudy Toth, and recorded with him as piano soloist, was popular in Canada. It, along with Hagood Hardy's 'Homecoming,' became the object of the first music plagiarism legal case in Canada, Gondos v. Hardy and Toth. The unsuccessful suit, which alleged copyright infringement, was dismissed with costs in July 1982, vindicating the Toth brothers.Canadian Talent Library Trust (CTL). A non-profit trust that produced a major series of recordings 1962-85 by Canadian artists and of Canadian compositions. It was conceived by Lyman Potts and initiated by the Standard Broadcasting Corporation-owned radio stations CFRB (Toronto) and CJAD (Montreal). Potts, a broadcast executive, was director of the CTL 1962-78, followed 1978-85 by JACKIE RAE. Its offices were located in Toronto.Initially the CTL distributed its recordings only to subscribing broadcast stations, but in 1966, with its 80th project, it began leasing its masters for commercial release to RCA, Columbia (SONY), CAPITOL, GRT, QUALITY, United Artists, and Intercan. Its productions typically comprised popular and light classical music in formats suitable for AM broadcast (ie, brief performances in an 'easy-listening' or 'middle-of-the-road' style). When in 1970 the CRTC introduced its regulations requiring the increased use, on radio, of music composed and/or performed by Canadians, the CTL assumed fresh significance as a ready source of such material. Its roster included TOMMY AMBROSE, PETER APPLEYARD, JOHN ARPIN, JERRY TOTH, the singer Keath Barrie, ED BICKERT, theBOSS BRASS (originally formed for a CTL recording), the LAURIE BOWER Singers, RON COLLIER, the clarinetist Henry Cuesta, Trump Davidson, MAUREEN FORRESTER, the singers Cecile Frenette, Vic Franklyn, and Paul Hahn, the Hamilton Philharmonic, the Hart House Orchestra, the singer Sheree Jeacocke, YVES LAPIERRE, the trombonist Ted Roderman, the SPITFIRE BAND, WILLIAM STEVENS, Don Thompson, and several orchestras and choirs under the direction of JOHNNY BURT, who served 1962-72 as the CTL's music director. By 1985, when the CTL was merged with FACTOR and ceased production, it had released 268 LPs. Tracks Include : please see pics CONDITION Jacket: VG+ Vinyl: NM- (Plays well!) CANADIAN STEREO Pressing of ****JERRY TOTH********THE TWELVE SIDES OF JERRY TOTH**** Please see my other listings I use the 'Goldmine' grading system. (NM, VG, G with appropriate +/-) NM would be my highest grade. I have endeavored to be as accurate in my assessment as I can. I will not sell LPs that appear to be in less of a condition than I myself would be happy to receive. The only exception would be truly rare discs and then any flaws would be clearly explained. Having been disappointed by the condition of a number of LPs purchased I am EXTREMELY sensitive to this issue and will try my best to grade with this in mind.
