WILLEM NYLAND: PIANO STUDIES SERIES 203 GAGE HILL PRESS 1960s Willem Nyland was a chemist by trade but also a gifted improvisational pianist. In the 1960s, at the height of the "Turn On Tune In Drop Out" LSD madness, Richard Albert (now known as Ram Dass) and Ralph Metzner became interested in the ideas of Gurdjieff. Alpert & Metzner were two thirds of the Harvard trio of professors who championed LSD and were asked to leave the University. Metzner was at that time the editor of "The Psychedelic Review". Alpert and Timothy Leary had formed the Castalia Foundation. Willem Nyland was widely known in those days as one of the most authoritative students of Gurdjieff. Although Mr. Nyland always made it clear that he adamantly opposed all drug use, from marijuana to LSD, he wasn't one to summarily dismiss a person because of drug use. But the focus of his work with groups and with individuals was on pursuing the practical application of the Gurdjieff ideas in daily life, and not on drug rehabilitation. One day Alpert and Metzner approached Mr Nyland with a gift offering from Timothy Leary: A Steinway concert grand piano. It was probably on this piano that Willem Nyland recorded these improvisational "Piano Studies". The COVER is in Very Good condition with all seams intact. Inner sleeve is folded and torn. The VINYL has some marks. If you are a fan of Gurdjieff or collect obscure Improvisational piano LPs from the hippie era, then this is for you! All observations based on visual inspection - unable to check how records play. See my other listings for more great items! Please pay within 7 days I accept PayPal only.
